The Department of Environmental Services is responsible for providing effective and efficient management of wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste for the visitors and citizens of Springfield.  This mission requires us to maintain critical infrastructure around the clock, manage multi-million dollar facilities, and interact daily with the citizens we serve. The Assistant Director assists the Director with managing the daily operation of the Wastewater Utility, the Integrated Solid Waste Management Program, as well as the City's Phase I MS4 Stormwater program.

With over 1200 miles of sanitary sewer infrastructure and two award-winning treatment plants, Springfield is widely recognized as one of the most innovative wastewater utilities in the country. The department is working to implement a $200 Million Sanitary Sewer Overflow Control Plan and is looking for strong leadership to execute this plan.

In addition, the department is responsible for maintaining compliance with the City's municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) stormwater permit. The City's stormwater program is regarded as one of the premiere stormwater programs in the state and works to protect and improve water quality through watershed analysis and implementation of stormwater control measures.

The department also manages the Integrated Solid Waste Management System for the region.  This enterprise system operates a landfill, recycling collection sites, yard waste recycling center, household chemical collection center, and a community education program.
